Six Sentence Sunday - 'His word is law' - 29-07-12

Raoul the Lord of the Castle has imprisoned his young wife Bess in order to force her obedience, and is visiting her on the first night to see if she has been compliant.

The room was in shadows when Raoul finally turned the key and came in. He had brought food and an oil lamp and he looked about him. In an attempt to hide the obvious evidence of her defiance, Bess had gathered up the shreds of the napkins and hidden them in the basket so that all looked ordered, at first, but he shone the lamp there and saw the tiny, savagely-torn pieces. His eyes widened as he comprehended the misdeed.

“Why did you do this, Bess?” he asked.

“Because I hate sewing!” Bess snapped at him.
