Six Sentence Sunday - 'His word is law' - 19-08-12

Bess, who has never before done sewing in her life, is required to hem some napkins and  refuses to do it. To Raoul, her husband and Lord of the Castle, this is a symbol of her disobedience. He has locked her up until she complies and cannot, for the sake of his authority, let her off the hook.
“Then let me do something else other than sewing!”
“That would not be true obedience.”
“I’m hungry,” said Bess, changing the subject.
“You may eat first, but then I will spank you like I promised. Hard.”
Raoul had set the plate and cup near the window and now he passed them to Bess, who wolfed down the bread and chicken and drank greedily of the ale.
